Mastering Topspin in Pickleball: Common Mistakes and How to Correct Them

Topspin in pickleball is the difference between dominating the game and handing easy points to the opponent. In recent years, this sport has evolved significantly, becoming faster and more aggressive, with spin playing a crucial role.

The ability to apply topspin is no longer a luxury, but a necessity for players who want to take their game to the next level. Let's explore the five most common mistakes players make when trying to master topspin and how to correct them, as taught by Jordan Briones of the Briones Pickleball Academy.

The Danger of Wrist Movement

One of the most common pitfalls when trying to generate topspin in pickleball is the overuse of the wrist. Many players attempt to perform a wrist "flick" to create spin, but this results in inconsistency and can even cause injuries.

Briones points out that the correct technique involves keeping the wrist steady and using the shoulder, along with a smooth, upward motion. Think of your arm as a pendulum, not a whip. This ensures the ball follows a predictable trajectory.

Professionals are able to maintain this stability remarkably well, which allows them greater control and efficiency in the game. Keeping the wrist steady is key to effective and consistent topspin.

Stop Pushing, Start Lifting

The trap of linear motion is one of the biggest obstacles for players who want to elevate their game. Pushing the ball towards the target may seem natural under pressure, but it is not effective for generating topspin.

To create true topspin, it's necessary to follow a vertical swing path. Briones notes that this is especially crucial in two-handed backhand dinks, where the "pushing" mistake is common.

The correct technique involves initiating the paddle movement below the ball and following an upward swing. While this may seem counterintuitive, the physics of topspin causes the ball to return to the court, creating a more offensive game.

The Importance of Bending Down

Properly preparing for a topspin starts with correct body positioning. Many players fail to lower the racket handle in time, hindering the potential for an effective swing.

To generate topspin, preparation must begin below the ball. This means that footwork and knee flexion are fundamental to positioning the body correctly.

Strategies to ensure the movement starts well below the ball include good posture and advance preparation, allowing for an efficient and powerful swing path.

Consistency in the Racket Angle

In pickleball, consistency is essential. An unstable racket angle during the swing can compromise the player's accuracy and control.

Many players make the mistake of changing the angle of the racket during the movement, especially on the backhand flick. Briones recommends maintaining a constant angle in the contact zone to improve consistency.

Maintaining stability in the racket angle increases the margin for error and allows the player to focus more on technique than on skill. This transforms topspin into an efficient control tool.

'Hero Shot' Syndrome

We all want to land that perfect topspin shot, but without a solid base, it can result in an easy mistake for the opponent. The balance between aggression and control is key.

Briones emphasizes that a solid base is essential for executing effective shots. If the base is not well established, the player should not attempt an aggressive shot.

Maintain your balance and use topspin as a tool to pressure your opponent. By stopping the "pushing" and starting the "lifting," your shots will begin to land where you want them, right on your opponent's shoelaces.
