The Growth of Pickleball in Utah High Schools
Pickleball is capturing the hearts of high schools in Utah, quickly becoming a statewide passion. With the emergence of the Utah High School Pickleball Association (UHSPA), the sport has gained significant momentum, creating a network of school clubs that compete during a dedicated season.
In this article, we explore the impact of UHSPA, the growing participation of schools, and the promising future of pickleball in Utah. Discover how this sport is transforming the lives of students, parents, and entire communities.
The Emergence of UHSPA
The Utah High School Pickleball Association (UHSPA) was founded by Jason Peery, a former professional player and coach, with the clear goal of promoting pickleball among Utah schools. The creation of this association marked a turning point for the sport in the state.
Jason Peery, along with his wife Lisa and director Helen Monson, make up the board of the UHSPA. As a non-profit organization, the UHSPA works diligently to promote pickleball among young people in Utah, providing structure and support for the development of the sport.
According to Jason Peery, the intention is that with the UHSPA structure, school teams will have a legitimate place in high school sports, aiming to make pickleball a sanctioned sport in Utah.
The Inaugural Pickleball Season in Schools
Since the founding of the UHSPA, the number of pickleball clubs in Utah high schools has grown significantly, with more than 30 schools forming teams. In the inaugural season, more than 20 schools participated, highlighting the enthusiasm for the sport.
The season included six weeks of competitions, culminating in team and individual championships for gender-specific doubles, mixed doubles, and singles. It was an exciting period that brought together students of varying skill levels.
- More than 300 students competed, ranging from beginner to advanced levels.
- Schools traveled up to 3 hours to participate in the events, demonstrating dedication and passion for the sport.
The Positive Impact on the School Community
The growth of pickleball has generated a wave of positivity in Utah's school communities. Students, parents, and coaches express enthusiasm and mutual support, creating an environment of camaraderie and respect both on and off the court.
With the support of in-house facilities and sponsors, the sport has thrived. Pickleball professionals like Tyler Loong and Etta Tuionetoa have contributed to the development of school clubs by providing donations to help winning schools continue to expand.
Helen Monson, director of UHSPA, expressed optimism: "We are just at the beginning for pickleball in Utah high schools. It's a joy to see Jason's initiative grow and to see so much positivity among everyone involved."
Expansion and Future of Pickleball in Utah
Looking to the future of pickleball in Utah is exciting. The UHSPA plans to expand its activities, forming a new region in southern Utah, with competitions in St. George and Cedar City, further broadening the reach of the sport.
Furthermore, UHSPA is sponsoring the training of new certified referees, ensuring that competitions are well supported and organized. This expansion not only increases opportunities for students but also solidifies pickleball as a vital component of school sports in Utah.
With these efforts, the UHSPA hopes that pickleball will become an officially sanctioned sport in high schools, creating a lasting legacy for future generations of athletes.
