Chile: A Model of Planned Integration for World-Class Events

Chile is consolidating its position as a regional pioneer by integrating Paralympic table tennis and achieving world-class events. Recently, the country made history by hosting the ITTF World Para Future Santiago de Chile 2025, a tournament that symbolizes much more than an exceptional competition. This event represents the culmination of a carefully orchestrated integration process that has transformed the governance of Paralympic table tennis in the country.

Inspired by the pioneering integration of the ITTF in 2007, the Chilean Table Tennis Federation (Fechiteme) embarked on an ambitious transformation that repositioned the sport in Chile.

The Integration Process in Chile

Until 2024, the governance of Paralympic table tennis in Chile followed the traditional path, being administered by the National Paralympic Committee, Copachi. However, motivated by the ITTF initiative, Fechiteme initiated a significant transformation. Under the guidance of experts such as Omar Refaat and Carlos Esnard, Chile adopted a methodical and well-planned integration process.

The use of the ITTF's online integration service for Paralympic table tennis was crucial. This comprehensive program was designed to help federations face the complex challenges of transition. Fechiteme followed a detailed roadmap that included institutional restructuring, technical development, and financial management.

The careful approach ensured that each step of the transition was planned and executed with precision, setting a new standard for the sport in the country.

Critical Areas of Training and Development

The training focused on three critical areas that were fundamental to the successful integration:

  • Institutional: Restructuring of administrative bodies to support the new governance.
  • Technical Development: Improving the infrastructure and technical skills of athletes and coaches.
  • Financial Management: Strategic financial planning to ensure long-term sustainability.

These pillars formed the basis for the sustainable and continuous growth of Paralympic table tennis in Chile, ensuring that the transition was more than just an administrative change.

Collaboration as the Key to Success

One of the most significant factors in the success of the integration process in Chile was the collaborative spirit among the organizations involved. Fechiteme, Copachi, and the National Sports Institute (IND) worked together to ensure a smooth and efficient transition.

Copachi's accumulated experience in areas such as IPC classification and regulations was incorporated into the process, ensuring that valuable knowledge was not lost. This fostered continuity that avoided institutional rivalries and strengthened the sporting ecosystem.

The involvement of multiple entities ensured the protection of the athletes and facilitated the transfer of knowledge in a professional and effective manner.

Impact and Legacy of the Tournament

The ITTF World Para Future Santiago de Chile 2025 highlighted the success of the planned integration. The event was held at the state-of-the-art facilities of the Paralympic Training Center, a lasting legacy of the Santiago 2023 Para Pan American Games.

The seamless coordination between Fechiteme and Copachi during the tournament exemplified the effectiveness of the integration process. More than just an isolated event, the tournament served as a springboard for future initiatives.

Plans are already underway for Paralympic training camps, classification seminars, and opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities, demonstrating a continued commitment to the growth of the sport.

Reflections from Leaders and Future Perspectives

Beatriz Campillay, president of Fechiteme, highlighted the importance of working together: "This integration process was possible thanks to the combined effort of all parties involved. The synergy of our work allowed us to successfully hold the ITTF World Para Future Santiago 2025 at the Paralympic Training Center. Now, it's time to continue the good work to make Paralympic table tennis grow even more."

Sebastian Villavicencio, president of Copachi, emphasized the broader impact: "It was a very enriching undertaking that is paving the way for other federations in Chile. Paralympic table tennis in Chile has reached a standard that allows us to be pioneers in the region and gives us the foundation to dream of new goals."

Chile's success serves as an inspiring example for other federations in Latin America and beyond, demonstrating that planned and collaborative integration can elevate Paralympic sport to new heights.
